    Patrick,

We use NCAR Graphics on Solaris too. Your attached sample file cpex08.ncgm
displays perfectly on my X terminal.

I have seen lots of black ctrans windows due to various causes. IMO ctrans is a
little tricky to use on X windows systems. Try some of the following:

    1. Click once in the black window after it comes up. ctrans is a sequential
frame viewer, and you have to click in the window to get the next frame to
    display.

    2. X windows colormap overallocated. Some X terminals use a 256-color map with
a color sharing system. My experience is the sharing system can be
misconfigured, and various softwares can hog the color map. Try adding the
-pcmap switch to your ctrans command, or close (not just minimize) all
graphics-intense windows, especially Netscape and Citrix/MS Windows, before
    running ctrans.

    3. GKS graphics kernel out of date. Black windows resulted when we tried to
use new 24-bit-color terminals with older graphics softwares that only knew
about 16-bit color maps. A clumsy workaround was found by configuring these
terminals for "default 16-bit pseudocolor". I don't have a good recipe for
    fixing this yet.

    I hope this helps.
