You might take a look at the NCL Scientific Tutorial at the URL:

and more specifically, session 3 of the tutorial at:

    http://ngwww.ucar.edu/ngdoc/ng/ug/ncl/tutor/session3.html

This is an NCL example, but if you see an example that might help you, we
may have an HLU C or Fortran version that we can email you.
