First, regarding X11: in the future, new releases of X11 won't
install static libraries (at least not by default). I ran into this
when upgrading a host to Fedora Core 5. It's also when I discovered
that with X11R7, the old (familiar) X11 directory structure goes away
and that it seems static libraries go away in favor of shared libraries.
Regarding NCAR Graphics and static/dynamic libraries: NCAR Graphics
does not require static libraries (for X11 or any other required
library). In reviewing replies I've made to this mail list regarding
(peripherally or directly) this issue, I may have clouded this
issue. Precompiled binaries provided for NCAR Graphics are created
with every effort to build against static libraries, so end-users can
simply install NCAR Graphics and be off and running. NCAR Graphics
can be built to rely upon shared libraries; if you require help in
doing this, please contact me.
Lastly, though my testing/experience is by no means exhaustive, I've
not come across a Linux distribution that is better or worse for
building/supporting NCAR Graphics. Though I don't have access to all
sorts of distributions, I am aware of folks who successfully use NCAR
Graphics on a Mandrake Linux (now called Mandriva?) host. Perhaps
one or more will reply here!
