Hi Lin,
You might want to consider using NCL (NCAR Command Language) for your
application, since we have developed some NCL scripts that do
nice-looking polar stereographic plots with latitude/longitude labels.
NCL is built on top of NCAR Graphics, so you still get the high
quality graphics. NCL is especially useful if you have netCDF, HDF,
or GRIB data, as there is a simple interface in NCL for reading these
files.
To see some of the polar stereographic plots that can be created and
the NCL scripts that created them, go to:
http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/csm/support/CSM_Graphics/polar.shtml
This web site was developed by Sylvia Murphy in the Climate and Global
Dynamics Division at NCAR. They use NCL heavily for both model and
observational data, and Sylvia has set up this web site to provide
lots of NCL examples for doing various kinds of plots, especially for
use with the CCSM (Community Climate System Model)
If you decide to go this route, let me know via a personal email
message, and I'll help you with masking the values over the ocean.
There are some masking examples at:
