Hi Malcolm,
Since you've brought up Mac OS 10.4, I'd like to quickly make a
statement about it for the benefit of other NCAR Graphics users. Due
to some issues with MacOS 10.4, we (NCAR employees) are being
cautioned not to upgrade until some of the issues are resolved. As a
result, I can't make any statements yet about compatibility between
binaries built under 10.3 and how they will work under 10.4.

I assume you are talking about Absoft's xlf? Is so, NCAR Graphics
cannot be be built with this xlf due to a problem in the way the
compiler handles the initialization of common block variables in block
data statments. (Basically, the variables don't get initialized.)
I've had many conversations with Absoft about this problem, and they
have not given me a date on when they plan to fix this bug.
There is a work-around, but it's a bit hideous. It requires that you
link with individual *.o files instead of the NCAR Graphics libraries
(libncarg.a, libncarg_gks.a, etc). This means that you have to link
to hundreds of *.o files! To me, this is an unreasonable work around,
and prone to error, so I've decided to wait until Absoft fixes the
bug.
I am happy to provide the config file I used, in case Absoft has
fixed the bug. I've attached it to this message, "Darwin.absoft".
