I'm using SuSE rather than Mandrake, but I used find to locate libXpm.a
and libXpm.so under /usr/X11R6/lib/, and then rpm -qf showed those lib
files came from the xdevel rpm.

So you could confirm what Mandrake rpm they come from on your desktop,
and then see if that's installed on your laptop.
