    My memory may be failing here, but this looks like output from Sun's
    parallel make, dmake. This is supposed only to run things in parallel if
    the make file says they don't depend on each other. However it may be that
    the make files that come with Ncar Graphics have incorrect dependencies in
    a way that breaks with dmake but causes no trouble for normal, boring old
    make. So, I'd check if you are using dmake (maybe it you have make as an
    alias for dmake) and if you are, switch to ordinary make.
