Mary,

        Thanks for the response, I'm afraid that this doesn't help me at all
because so to speak I don't use this language. I use what I think you folks
call low-level utilities like calls to autograph routines, and the kinds of
programming that are in agex07.f (even if I can't follow the details).
The material you sent is completely unreadable to me, and I don't have the
time/interest to learn a new language and convert all of my plotting programs.
 
        What would help me is an analog of the encoding used in the example
I mentioned above, which gives me patterns like ----- , --- ---, - * - * ,
The specific problem is that I can't follow the use of $ and ' in format
statement 1001, in conjunction with a DASH/LENGTH. of 28.
