Preserving black bg in color Postscript

Please help with the following simple question.

I have several color plots on black background. To
preserve the background color when converting the
NCGM file to color PostScript, I tried

ctrans -d ps.color -simulatebg gmfile > gmfile.ps

However, when I used ghostview to view the resulting
color PostScript file, the background is not black.

Does the option -simulatebg only take effect when
sending the resulting to the color printer but not
when viewing using a PostScript viewer?

I have not tried to print the resulting file yet
since it's kind of big and I'm not sure it would
appear as intended (colors on black background)
in hard copy.
