Sorry about the source of confusion here. You are correct, IBM is the
source of the xlf compiler, but Absoft has been providing support for
xlf on MacOSX. It is the Absoft tech support folks whom I have been in
discussion with about the problems I had with xlf under MacOSX.
I also use xlf on our IBM/AIX systems, and do not have the problem
with common block data initialization. NCAR Graphics and NCL
both compile just fine under this configuration.
