I've installed X11 from the xfree86 web site and now want to install
ncarg and ncl from the fink repository. This seems to have launched me
on a vicious cycle of options that I cannot escape. When I now do a
'fink install ncarg' or 'fink install ncl' I almost immediately get
the message:
fink needs help picking an alternative to satisfy a virtual dependency.
The
candidates:
(1) xfree86-base-threaded: XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients
and data
(2) xfree86-base: XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and data
(3) xfree86: XFree86 distribution
if I pick (3) then after about 3 hours I get the message:
You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and/or /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86 again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp.
system-xtools instead to make this known to Fink's package system.
Fink does not understand 'fink install system-xfree86', complaining
that there is no such package. Nor does it understand 'fink install
system-xtools'.
The fink FAQ tells me to 'fink install xfree86-43' which doesn't work
either.
How can I get fink to install ncarg or ncl w/o having to throw out the
X I have just so I can spend half of a day letting fink do it again?
Thanks
Mike Page
