    Greetings everyone,

I appear to be running into a hitch compiling ncarg-4.2.3. This hitch has
manifests itself in some font selection difficulty. I am new to ncarg and to
FORTRAN, but am excited to learn the system.

Here's the nature of the problem:

When running some of the examples using ncargex, I've noticed that quite
while the example codes compile up fine, they run into a problem during
execution. Here's some representative output on STDERR:

ERROR 2 PCFOPN - Error opening font 18

At this point execution stops. I can view the NCGM, see the X11 display, or
render the PostScript output, but apparently, only to the point of the font
error. It looks like the text that would have been created at the font
opened OK, is missing, and any further graphical operations stop.

Doing some digging, I think I can trace my error to a problem with my
fontcap directory. In my installation, there isn't one! Why? Well, I think
it may have something to do with a silent problem that occured during
    compilation of the ncarg software.

Digging thru my make-output file, I found this:

    make[4]: Entering directory
    '/home/ats_droid/tarball/ncarg-4.2.3/common/source/fontcap'

.... (the Gnu Fortran77 compiler g77 compiles various source files)
    ....
.... (then some messages about processing fontcap files..)

    Processing fontcap font1
    Processing fontcap font2
    ...
    Processing fontcap font22
    make[4]: *** [font22] Segmentation fault
    make[4]: Leaving directory
    '/home/ats_droid/tarball/ncarg-4.2.3/common/source/fontcap'

I'm attaching the make-output file so you can look at the full make output.
The make continued merrily along without another word, but upon careful
scrutiny of the files that eventually got installed, I don't have a fontcap
directory. So, examples like epltch are not completely working.

Anyone have any thoughts or helpful suggestions?

    My system is:

AMD Athlon 650MHz running Slackware Linux 7.
    Kernel 2.4.5
GNU gcc and g77 compilers in use. All the standard libraries, etc, present.
    256MB RAM, 2GB swap space.
