Created file.ncgm but can't use ctrans...?

Hi, I just downloaded ncarg-4.2.3 and am a wee bit lost. Following the
example on the homepage under 'quick test' I successfully ran:
ncargex cpex08
and I can see cpex08.ncgm in the directroy.
When I type ctrans -d X11 cpex08.ncgm I get the following message:
# ctrans -d X11 cpex08.ncgm
ctrans: FATAL - Could not process CGM element(class=0, id=1, name="Begin
Metafile"
) [ XOpenDisplay(0:0) ]

I tried specifying # setenv GRAPHCAP X11 and also # setenv DISPLAY 0:0
I think the problem is with X11 but I have no idea what/where/why.

Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Ico

P.S. I am running Debian Linux on a PC.
