Come to our September Class/Conference! We will be sending
out our pre-conference announcement soon. The focus of the
class/conference will be the new interfaces which include a
set of higher level Fortran and C interfaces (HLUs), a new
interactive NCAR Command Language (NCL), and a prototype GUI.
The prototype GUI will be perfectly usable, but we caution that it
may have a new look and feel as we improve it in future versions.
We're very excited about NCL. It is a new language for reading
data and performing data operations either from the command
line, or in a batch script manner. You can also generate
NCAR Graphics visualizations from NCL.
At 4.0, we will support XY plotting, contours, maps, labelbars,
legends, text, annotations, and overlays. Meanwhile, all of
the capabilities of the low level libraries will be retained.
For output we will support drawing directly into an X11 window,
NCGM, and all forms of PostScript.
For input, NCL will read netCDF, GRIB, ASCII, and binary files.
We already have several other formats on our TO-DO list and will
be looking for others at the conference.
We expect beta testing to start in April. We will only be able
to include about 20 sites. Which sites are chosen will depend
upon a number of factors including site interests, time they
can invest in the testing, license status, ...
If you are interested in being a beta tester for any or all of
the new interfaces (excluding the prototype GUI which we will
only be testing locally) send e-mail to ncargfx@ncar.ucar.edu.
State which of the following interfaces you are most interested
in testing.
- High Level Utilities, Fortran binding
- High Level Utilities, C binding
- NCAR Command Language
Beta testing will be done on SGI and Sun systems.
Hope to see everyone in September!
